Introduction

NOTE: The X-Plate render in this guide has been updated, but does not affect the assembly process highlighted in this guide.

  1. If your X-plate is not already tapped for threads, tap M3x0.5 threads into the holes marked in Red. Tap M4x0.7 threads into the holes marked in Blue.
    • If your X-plate is not already tapped for threads, tap M3x0.5 threads into the holes marked in Red.

    • Tap M4x0.7 threads into the holes marked in Blue.

    • Install and secure Extruder Stepper Motor as shown using (4) M3x8 countersunk fasteners in the holes marked in Orange.

    • Loosely install (2) Belt Clamps using (3) M3x8 BHCS fasteners at locations marked in Green.

    • The 4th fastener will be installed later in assembly.

  2. Loosely mount previously assembled X Plate to X axis MGN12 carriage using (4) M3x6 countersunk fasteners marked in Red.

  3. Slide T-lock into and through DrivenGear1:40 making sure to align the flat face of the shaft with the set screw. Place Print_AssemblyTool_ToolLockIndex over exposed portion of T-lock. Use a center punch or other suitable marker to mark (2) drilling locations.
    • Slide T-lock into and through DrivenGear1:40 making sure to align the flat face of the shaft with the set screw. Place Print_AssemblyTool_ToolLockIndex over exposed portion of T-lock.

    • Use a center punch or other suitable marker to mark (2) drilling locations.

    • Remove T-lock and assembly tool. Drill and tap driven gear at the marked locations to a depth of 4mm.

    • M2 taps are small and fragile. Keep tap threads lubricated and reverse tap direction often.

  4. Press (1) 5x10x4mm bearing onto T-lock until forward most retaining ring groove is beyond the face of the bearing as shown. The KB3D T-lock is sized for this to be a tight interference fit. This allows lock depth adjustments. Avoid striking the bearing for installation. Instead, use a press or vise to push the bearing to depth with a suitable driver.

    • Using a moderate (~320 Grit) sandpaper, slowly and uniformly reduce the outer diameter of the T-lock at the location marked in Blue.

    • Your target diameter dimension will depend on your remaining 5x10x4mm flanged bearing I.D.

    • For this operation, we are aiming for an easy, sliding fit of the bearing to the shaft - unlike the strong press fit of the forward bearing previously installed.

    • This is a non-critical operation, but will aid in installation and future serviceability of the T-lock.

    • After satisfied, remove the bearing from the shaft and set aside for the next step.

  5. Press 5x10x4 flanged bearing into Print_Bracket_XAxis at location marked in Red. Install (5) M3 Heatset Inserts into the locations marked in Orange. See Heatset Insert Supplement for best practices. Install (1) M3 Heatset Insert into Print_ToolLockMountNema8 at the location marked in Teal.
    • Press 5x10x4 flanged bearing into Print_Bracket_XAxis at location marked in Red.

    • Install (5) M3 Heatset Inserts into the locations marked in Orange. See Heatset Insert Supplement for best practices.

    • Install (1) M3 Heatset Insert into Print_ToolLockMountNema8 at the location marked in Teal.

    • Install and secure Print_Bracket_XAxis to X-plate using the following fasteners:

    • (2) M3x30 marked Fuscia

    • (1) M3x35 marked Blue

  6. Loosely install the M3x45 fastener from the opposite side (marked in Green) using an M3 washer and M3 hex nut as shown. Slide the tool change lock through the X carriage assembly until the flanged bearing seats into the X-plate.
    • Loosely install the M3x45 fastener from the opposite side (marked in Green) using an M3 washer and M3 hex nut as shown.

    • Slide the tool change lock through the X carriage assembly until the flanged bearing seats into the X-plate.

    • From the rear, slide the 5mm wavy washer onto the t-lock shaft and install the E-Clip in rear T-lock slot.

    • Be sure that the wavy lock washer is captured between the rear flanged bearing and T-lock E-Clip.

    • Secure Print_ToolLockMountNema8 to Print_XBracket using the following fasteners:

    • (1) M3x10 SHCS marked Blue.

    • (1)M3x40 SHCS marker Fuscia.

    • (2) M3x25 SHCS marked Orange.

  7. Loosely install Print_BeltClamp01 & Print_BeltClamp02 using the following fasteners: (2) M3x40 SHCS marked Red (2) M3x8 SHCS marked Blue
    • Loosely install Print_BeltClamp01 & Print_BeltClamp02 using the following fasteners:

    • (2) M3x40 SHCS marked Red

    • (2) M3x8 SHCS marked Blue

    • NOTE: These fasteners will be fully tightened later in assembly.

    • Slide LockMotor_Nema8 into position as shown. Secure motor with (4) appropriate fasteners.

    • NOTE: Most motors will accept a standard M3x0.5x8mm fastener here.

    • Install and secure WormGearDrive1:40 onto shaft of Nema 8 motor. Use the modeled access window for tightening as shown.

    • Be sure to align the set screw with the flat surface of the Nema 8 output shaft.

  8. Install and secure WormGearDriven1:40 to CNC_ToolChangeLock using the included set screw. Adjust the Nema 8 motor position as needed for proper contact between gears. Be sure to center the driven gear with the teeth of the drive gear as shown. Be sure to align the set screw with the flat section of the tool lock shaft. Install and secure BlowerFan30x30 to X axis using (2) M2x6 countersunk screws.

    • Be sure to center the driven gear with the teeth of the drive gear as shown. Be sure to align the set screw with the flat section of the tool lock shaft.

    • Install and secure BlowerFan30x30 to X axis using (2) M2x6 countersunk screws.

    • These screws should sit flush with the face of the cooling fan when installed. You may need to slightly countersink the mounting holes of the fan housing to achieve this.

    • Apply thermal compound to the copper face of your cooling block and secure the block to the X-plate as shown.

    • NOTE: The X plate is milled with 4 mounting holes (previously tapped with M4 threads). Most water blocks will attach to this bolt pattern in some way. If additional hole locations are needed, you may drill and tap the Xplate as needed.

    • Ensure the copper face of the water block is making even and flat contact with the Xplate. Over-torqued fasteners on some water blocks can cause distortion and will reduce cooling performance.

  9. Install (1) Blackstop endstop into pocket of Print_XBracket_V2 and secure using (1) M3x6 SHCS. There are 2 locations for this M3 fastener in the X bracket. Use the lower hole to secure for now. Vertical height will be adjusted later. Press (1) 3x3mm cylinder magnet into location marked in green. The magnet will protrude slightly when seated fully.

    • Press (1) 3x3mm cylinder magnet into location marked in green. The magnet will protrude slightly when seated fully.

    • Secure Print_ToolLockIndex using (2) M2x5mm BHCS. The final rotaional position will be adjusted later.

    • Install remaining Blackstop endstop as shown and secure to Print_ToolLockMount_Nema7 using (1) M3x6 SHCS.

    • The vertical position of the switch will be set/determined later.
