Introduction

Use this section to plan your build. Your BOM and workflow during assembly will vary based on these options.

  1. Support for up to 5 direct drive tools
    • Support for up to 5 direct drive tools

    • The quantity needed of each of the components in the relevant BOM section must be multiplied by the number of tools you choose

    • Adding tools later requires no mechanical changes

  2. Blackbox offers 2 types of tool lock drive systems 1 = Carriage mounted NEMA8 with 1:40 worm gear (KB3D Standard)
    • Blackbox offers 2 types of tool lock drive systems

    • 1 = Carriage mounted NEMA8 with 1:40 worm gear (KB3D Standard)

    • 2 = Remote mounted NEMA17 with 1:40 worm gear. This option is in BETA! With nearly 1500 printing hours, we're getting ready to wrap up for release.

    • The BOM has separate sections for each lock type – order accordingly.

  3. The tool plate can be printed OR CNC machined CNC machining will offer longer tool lock life as well as increased coupling accuracy at the expense of cost. (KB3D Standard)
    • The tool plate can be printed OR CNC machined

    • CNC machining will offer longer tool lock life as well as increased coupling accuracy at the expense of cost. (KB3D Standard)

    • If you opt for the machined version, do not print Print_ToolHead_part01.

  4. The XY belt clamps can be printed OR CNC machined for use at the X-plate side of the carriage. Note: There are also (2) belt clamps designed separately for use at the backside of the carriage opposite the X-Plate. These are distinguishable by their (larger) size. If you opt for the machined version, do not print Print_BeltClamp1 or Print_BeltClamp2.

    • Machined belt clamps are standard in KB3D kits.

  5. Blackbox offers 2 types of end stop switches and 2 types of Z probes for automatic bed leveling. Endstop Type: 1 = KB3D Standard - Mechanical paddle micro switches (Guide here)
    • Blackbox offers 2 types of end stop switches and 2 types of Z probes for automatic bed leveling.

    • Endstop Type:

    • 1 = KB3D Standard - Mechanical paddle micro switches (Guide here)

    • 2 = Hall Effect (Specially designed for Blackbox) (Coming Soon!)

    • Z Probe Type:

    • 1 = Duet IR Probe

    • 2 = KB3D Standard - Honeywell Mechanical Switch (Guide here)

    • Endstop and Z Probe choices will dictate which files are printed to support them. These are separated in the BOM and assembly guide.

  6. The extrusions used in Blackbox are integral to its design. Some flexibility is possible: 1. 4040 extrusions can be standard (image 1 or similar) or “heavy” (image 2)
    • The extrusions used in Blackbox are integral to its design. Some flexibility is possible:

    • 1. 4040 extrusions can be standard (image 1 or similar) or “heavy” (image 2)

    • Note that Blackbox uses printed corner bracket covers to support the enclosure panels. The mounting fasteners for these covers will need drilled and tapped by hand if using heavy extrusions.

    • The benefit of a heavy extrusion is more machine mass. This reduces harmonics that can sometimes be visible in prints (aside from just your ears.) On Blackbox, this is only relevant at extremely high accelerations. 4040 extrusions in any style are quite sturdy.

    • 4040 extrusions can be full-slot or slotted only on select sides (for a cleaner appearance)

    • A standard build will use 40mm extrusions with an 8mm slot and 20mm extrusions with a 5mm slot.

    • 20mm extrusions with a 6mm slot are permittable without trouble, but be sure to order Tnuts accordingly.
